The Lyon Park community organizes a number of community events during the year, which are open to all members of the community and our neighbors. Event organizers are always in need of volunteers to help out. Please contact the sponsoring organization if you can volunteer to make one or more of these events a success.
In April, 2009, Lyon Park initiated the Lyon Park Champions Award to recognize exceptional volunteers. Click here for more on the awards.
See the PHOTOS page for pictures from each of the events this past year.
The community events that regularly occur each year are listed below
September -- Community Yard Sale
Community members can rent a table at the Community Yard Sale, which is sponsored by the Woman's Club.
October -- Halloween and Thanksgiving Events
On Thanksgiving day, Christ Church, located in Lyon Park, organizes a Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run/Walk through the community. For Halloween, the Community Center organizes a (daytime) Parade of Costumes for the children beginning at the Park and winding through parts of the neighborhood with police escort. A pumpkin-carving contest at the Park lets children see who can produce the most interesting pumpkin, with a plaque and prize certificates awarded. The traditional Lyon Park Halloween Bonfire is held after dark on Halloween, with refreshments and story-telling around the fire. Free, and open to the public.
November -- Lyon Park Craft and Bake Fair
The Community House is the scene for a fair featuring local crafts by neighbors and other vendors sponsored by the Community Center and a bake sale by the Womens' Club, with other events during the day.
December -- Childrens' Holiday Party
A caroling sing-along and a visit by Santa highlight this annual children's event put on by the Community Center. Bring a plate of holiday cookies to share. Free.
January -- Pancake Breakfast
Held for the first time in 2008 and then repeated in 2009. This is a fun, tasty event for neighbors to gather and enjoy a great breakfast. Organized by the Community Center.
March -- Chili Cookoff
Neighbors' donated chili and cornbread vie for top honors, and the neighborhood is well fed in the process. Organized by the Community Center
May -- Spring Fair
In 2008, Lyon Park held its 84th annual Spring Fair, an afternoon at the Park featuring games and pony rides for the children organized by the Community Center, bake and plant sales by the Womans' Club, and lunch offerings and refreshments.
May -- Spring Home and Gardens Tour
Reintroduced in 2008 under the sponsorship of the Citizens Association, the Spring Home and Gardens Tour (Villas and Vistas) features the opportunity to visit Lyon Park and Ashton Heights neighborhood homes and gardens in a walking tour. In 2008, the event also featured display tables by local contractors and realtors, and an adult reception afterwards.
